About EEPA

The Edmonton Emergency Physician Association (EEPA) represents emergency physicians working across hospitals in the Edmonton Zone, including the University of Alberta Hospital, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Grey Nuns Community Hospital, Sturgeon Community Hospital, Strathcona Community Hospital, and Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital, with additional members from the Misericordia Community Hospital and WestView Health Centre.

Founded in the 1980s, EEPA was established to provide a unified voice for emergency physicians and to help shape the future of Emergency Medicine in Edmonton. The organization played an important early role in developing local residency training by supporting the program’s first director, Dr. Terry Sosnowski, prior to formal recognition by Postgraduate Medical Education.

Today, EEPA remains deeply committed to advancing emergency medicine education, professional development, and collaboration across the Edmonton Zone. The association supports undergraduate and postgraduate learners through a range of initiatives, including sponsoring an annual medical student summer research internship, residency journal clubs and academic rounds, and resident wellness and community-building events, including the annual Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) summer BBQ. In addition, EEPA plays an active role in the Annual DEM resident retreat by sponsoring a CME session for staff physicians, as well as supporting opportunities for meaningful engagement between staff and residents. EEPA’s most recent initiative includes supporting informal “CME Nights,” where local emergency physicians can come together in a collegial setting to explore specialty topics and share knowledge in a more relaxed, interactive environment. Through these efforts, EEPA helps foster a strong culture of learning, mentorship, and collegiality within the emergency medicine community.

Since 2012, EEPA has proudly delivered the “High Five” biennial Emergency Medicine symposium, a flagship educational event that brings together Edmonton Zone ED physicians and trainees. This highly regarded symposium provides a dynamic forum for knowledge exchange, featuring expert speakers, evidence-informed updates, and discussions on a wide range of clinically relevant and emerging topics in emergency care. In addition to promoting continuing professional development, the event fosters collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to excellence in patient care, further strengthening the emergency medicine community in Edmonton and beyond.
